On route to visit and review our lovely clients at Azulfit on Fuerteventura we made a two night stop in the old town of Corralejo, located just a 40 minute drive from the airport.

We stayed at the boutique design hotel Avanti, a blue and white ‘sailors’ house. The Avanti was the first hotel to open in Corralejo in 1969. Corralejo is a fishing village and inside the theme is nautical and the style snazzy and chic. I only wish I worn my sailors outfit!

We arrived at night, on an easyjet flight from Stansted (flight time 4.5 hours) and got to the hotel at 10pm.

It was my first time on the Island and on the drive on the way to the hotel, as we were approaching Corralejo I was surprised to see a very modern shopping complex with Zara and Mango (so if you forget anything or you were in too much of a hurry before you left home, then you will find everything you need). The town itself is quite touristy, lots of bars and restaurants. We see mostly families and couples. Avanti is an adults only hotel with a minimum age of 16 for guests.

There was someone at reception waiting for us when we arrived and to show us to our ocean front room. After six long months of being nowhere near the ocean, it was blissful to hear the sound of the waves again.

The rooms are very modern, clean and nicely decorated. The bathroom was immaculately clean with strong water pressure, fluffy towels, dressing gown and slippers.

Just the comfort we were needing after a long day of travel. On our bed there was a sweet little letter from the ‘turndown’ team and two chocolates. It’s the little touchers that go a long way. I have to mention the bed as it was super comfy! (they only use organic cotton sheets).

The design of the room continues the nautical theme with photos and delicate art pieces of boats, anchors and a lighthouse. There is also an expresso coffee machine and mini bar along with cocktail shakers.

After a sound nights sleep we were up at sunrise and went for a run to explore the local area. There was a little beach right in front of the hotel that can be seen directly from our room..but the best beach is Waikiki where you can expect white soft sand and clear waters.

The hotel provides each guest with a beach towel along with a beach bag which are on the bed ready for the next day.

Breakfast is served from 8.30am – 10am and is not your typical breakfast buffet. The fruit platter was full of fresh juicy (and huge) melon, pineapple, grapes and dragon fruit. You can then order freshly squeezed orange juice, proper coffee and eggs cooked as you please.

There are meats, cheeses, freshly baked bread and croissants available too. The staff are very friendly and genuinely happy. In the evening the breakfast space is a popular grill and seafood restaurant called ‘Rompeolas’ and open to non guests. Being vegan we didn’t eat there but they do cater for vegetarians.

The hotel has a rooftop with a jacuzzi (which us heated at exactly 32º all year round, by the way) which overlooks the beach and is beautiful at sunset. This is the place to relax and take in the incredible views that stretch out to Lanzarote. There are a few sun loungers here for sun worshippers.

Be careful as it’s a real sun trap so make sure to cover up in a high sun factor! The wind in Fuerteventura can be deceptive and the temperature feels about 10 degrees hotter than it will tell you on your smart phone.

September is a wonderful month to travel weather wise (post school holidays) and when the winds on the Island have dropped. The beaches are not over crowded and flight prices are lower.

The hotel Avanti is perfect for people who like their privacy, peace and quiet. As it’s only got 15 rooms, they really take care of each guest and offer a personalised service.

For those going on to the Azulfit Surya or Lotus retreats this is our top choice.
